An American Airlines flight from LaGuardia Airport in New York City to North Carolina made an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport due to a bird strike that caused severe damage to one of the engines, but there were no reported casualties.
According to reports, American Airlines Flight 1722, which was scheduled to depart on the evening of December 12th at 7:20 PM with an intended flight duration of less than two hours, encountered a bird strike on the right engine. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stated that the impact caused significant damage to the engine, leading to a complete failure.
The aircraft was left operating on only its remaining engine but managed to land safely at JFK Airport.
One unnamed passenger, whose seat was near the wing, recounted, "I saw two balls of fire in the sky, and I thought I was going to die. I started praying; for about 30 seconds, I really thought I was going to die."
Amy Stamper from Tennessee also expressed her fear, saying, "I thought I was going to die."
The airline arranged accommodations for the passengers and rescheduled the new flight for the morning of Friday, December 13th.
